Advanced Product Management: Custom Fields at Checkout
Add product custom fields in Ordafy Business so checkout collects sizes, notes, preferences, and other details—then review answers on orders.
Why custom fields matter
Default checkout collects buyer contact and payment details. Custom fields on a product let you ask for fulfilment-critical answers—size, engraving text, delivery notes, gift messages, dietary preferences for food items—without a separate form tool. Fields are configured on the product in Business and answered when customers order.
Step 1: Open the product in Business
- Go to Products (
/products). - Open the product you want to customise.
- Find the custom fields / advanced checkout questions section for that listing.
Step 2: Choose field types
Ordafy supports common input types, including:
- Text / textarea: Short or longer free text
- Number: Quantities or measurements
- Email / phone: Extra contacts when needed
- Select, radio, checkbox: Guided choices (sizes, options, add-ons)
- Date: Preferred delivery or appointment-related dates when relevant
Step 3: Configure each field
- Label: Plain language the customer sees
- Required: Only mark required when fulfilment depends on the answer
- Options: For select / radio / checkbox lists
- Order: Put the most important questions first
Step 4: Test on Shop checkout
Publish or preview the product, add it to cart on Shop, and confirm fields appear before payment. Fix unclear labels before you promote the listing widely.
Step 5: Use answers when fulfilling
Open Orders (/products/orders) and inspect the order line / customer data for custom answers. Export or copy details into packing notes when needed. For recurring products, duplication can copy custom fields when that option is enabled.
Best practices
- Ask only what you will use—long forms increase abandonment.
- Prefer select lists over free text when answers must match stock SKUs.
- Respect UK GDPR: collect what you need, explain why in your privacy policy.
- Do not invent “conditional logic” workflows unless you see them in the product editor—keep forms simple.
Frequently asked questions
Are custom fields the same as product variants?
No. Variants usually change price or stock (size/colour SKUs). Custom fields collect extra answers that may not each have their own stock row.
Can services use custom fields too?
Services have their own booking questions and availability under Services and Bookings. This guide focuses on product order fields under Products.
Where do I see submitted answers?
On the related order in Orders (/products/orders), and when exporting order data from reports where available.
